This week in reading, our essential question is ‘What can we see in the sky?’ We took that question and applied it to science. We used VR goggles to explore things in the sky. The students could explore Mars, the moon, and a space station and also see a 3D video of the galaxy.
On Fantastic Friday, we have to make reading fun too! Mrs. Tierney’s students took turns reading aloud to the class using a microphone.
Mrs.Waun’s student used their snack to help them learn about fractions.
Mrs. Waun’s class finished our unit about the Lunar New Year.
Students learned about how weather events like earthquakes can shape our earth. They were then challenged to create a 2 story structure that could withstand a hurricane. They could choose sticks or straws and 2 types of adhesives. They planned and then built their structures.
Examining different types of rock samples under a microscope during our trip to Greenbush was fascinating!
Greenbush did not disappoint on Wednesday. Mrs. Tierney’s students had a great time learning about things that shape our earth such as wind and water. They also learned how rocks are formed and examined different types of rocks.
Another Greenbush station had our second graders testing small rocks to see if they left a mineral trail when scratched on a tile. They also tested made predictions and then tested 4 rocks to see if they would sink or float. They learned that the pumice floats.
Second graders went to Greenbush on Wednesday. They learned about what shapes our earth. Here some students are studying stones of different types rocks, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.
Some other fun things at Greenbush included getting to pet a snake, play on the Lego wall, and ride on the bus with their buddies! We had a great day!
After building, students tested their structures on a machine that simulates an earthquake. Their structure needed to withstand a 20 second earthquake. The structures held up very well! They impressed their teacher for sure!
