A head and shoulder shot of Robin McCleary

There were no nominations for Vikings Above & Beyond in the first couple of months following winter break. When nominations finally began to flow in again, it was decided to choose from among them to cover those missing months, beginning in January.

Any staff can nominate someone in the district they believe goes above and beyond their regular duties to serve others.

January’s nominee chosen for going Above & Beyond is Garfield Instructional Coach / Title I Coordinator / Building Test Coordinator Robin McCleary.

“I am honored and proud to be nominated for the Above & Beyond Award,” McCleary said.

Mrs. McCleary’s nominator had this to say about her: “There are many teachers at Garfield School who go above and beyond, but this teacher is one who stands out in her dedication to supporting teachers and students who are struggling in core subjects. Her extra instruction and interventions extend beyond the regular classroom hours, to both after school programs and summer school, showing her strong dedication to helping students achieve academic success. She exhibits patience and understanding as she helps students according to their individual needs and learning styles. At the same time she pushes them to reach deeper and strive harder to realize their abilities and potential.”

“The targeted aid she provides is helping students come closer to, or meet, state standards. One need only look at the state assessment data to see Garfield students moving out of lower performance levels to higher performance levels, and it being a significantly noticeable percentage difference. I believe her contributions play a significant part in this improvement.”

McCleary has been working in Parsons Schools since October 2004. She started at Lincoln as a Title Aide, taught 5th grade (shared with another teacher) there for one year, taught 1st grade there for three years, and then third grade through the 2018-19 school year.

“In 2010, we combined schooIs and I moved to Garfield to teach third, and in the fall of 2019, things really changed,” she said.  “I came out of the classroom to coordinate Title Services in our building, and to also learn more about mentoring teachers and students to achieve even higher academic growth through improved instructional practices and strategies. In the last few years, a big focus of my job has been the implementation of improved instruction in reading using evidence-based practices within the Science of Reading and our LETRS training.”

Congratulations to Robin McCleary, who consistently goes Above & Beyond for both students and staff.
