Parsons Middle School sixth grade English Language Arts Teacher Elizabeth “Lizzy” Smith has been chosen as the winner of the February Vikings: Above and Beyond Award.
“I was very pleased and honored to be nominated,” Miss Smith said. “There are so many amazing teachers in this district so for someone to think of me for this award means a lot!”
Smith’s nominators had this to say about her: “I am honored to nominate a member of our incredible 6th grade ELA team, for her unwavering dedication to our district and students. This year, she took on the challenge of implementing a new schedule, demonstrating flexibility, innovation, and a commitment to student success. Despite the challenges that come with change, she has embraced the new structure with enthusiasm, ensuring that students remain engaged and supported.”
“She consistently goes above and beyond by creating dynamic, student-centered lessons that foster a love for reading and writing. Whether it's staying late to provide extra help, collaborating with colleagues to improve instruction, or finding creative ways to make ELA more accessible and enjoyable, Lizzy exemplifies what it means to be an outstanding educator. Her dedication, adaptability, and passion have made a meaningful impact on both students and staff, making our district stronger every day.”
Smith attended Parsons District Schools from kindergarten through the 12th grade and says she valued the education she received from “the amazing teachers” she had.
“I began working as a part time ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) aide at the middle school in 2020 while I was attending LCC (Labette Community College). This made me decide to change my major to education, so I got a job as the full-time aide,” she said. “I then did a year of subbing while I finished my degree through K-State. The next year I was hired as the 6th grade ELA teacher.
While honored she was nominated, Smith said, “I would not be successful in my job without the amazing support from the middle school. Special shoutout to my partner teacher Brittiney Beery! I couldn't do it without her!”
Congratulations, Lizzy Smith.
