The April nominee for the Vikings: Above & Beyond Award is Parsons High School and Garfield Elementary Librarian Robie Martin.
“It is wonderful to be honored, and it's humbling, since our district has so many phenomenal teachers.”
Mrs. Martin has worked in this district for 32 years, mostly in the PHS Library, but also in the Middle School and Garfield libraries. She taught fifth grade prior to moving to the position of librarian.
Her nominator said Martin works tirelessly to help everyone in her capacity as the Parsons High School librarian and overall possessor of the schools’ and district history.
“She is always seeking how she can help others and stepping up to take action, and encourage others to do the same. The doors to her library are always open for students to use the space, whether it is to read, research, work on a project, play chess, practice guitar, or build a robotic hand. She ensures students are provided with a loving and comfortable environment where they always feel welcomed and accepted.
“She makes every effort to expand her knowledge, enabling her to always better serve her students and teachers in the ever-expanding role of librarians in today’s society. In this capacity she is always going above and beyond, ensuring she can help others expand their knowledge. She is willing to adapt to the ever- changing needs of students in a technologically enhanced world, such as learning how to operate a 3-D printer to instruct students in how to use one to make visual aids to go with book reports or other class assignments. She gives her time outside the classroom to serve as a sponsor for student organizations and activities, and to serve her students and the community.”
Mrs. Martin is retiring at the end of this school year.
“Teaching in the library and interacting with students has been a dream job,” she said. “I've had the good fortune to teach children of former students. Making connections with so many wonderful families has been a true joy.”
Congratulations Robie Martin!
