Dear USD 503 Families,
The USD 503 administration is providing preliminary information regarding upcoming changes to our school policies and procedures as they relate to Kansas House Bill 2299.
This new Kansas law, which takes effect in July, prohibits students from using cell phones and other personal communication devices during the school day, including during lunch periods when students are on campus. The law further states that these devices must not be accessible to students during school hours while they are on school grounds.
As a result of these state mandates, USD 503 has implemented updates to district policies, procedures, and student handbooks. At the beginning of August, the district will provide additional information and updates regarding expectations for students, staff, and parents as they relate to the new law. Preliminary recommendations for options to comply with the law include:
-Leaving phone at home;
-Leaving phone in car;
-Checking phones into the office on individual basis should a student forget they have brought it into the school.

The schools will operate on a “See it. Hear it. Take it” basis to comply with the law. Exceptions will be made for students requiring devices for medical and IEP reasons.
Please note these recommendations are subject to change.
We understand that this change may require adjustment for students and families. By working together, we can make this transition easier while continuing to create the best possible learning environment for our students.
Thank you for your support and partnership. We are looking forward to a great 2026-2027 school year.
